EIGHT

Penny was relieved when they finally arrived back at the cabin in the woods. It had begun to feel like a safe place for her. Caleb had been right that it was isolated enough to keep them hidden and he’d made certain, as they made the return drive, that no one was following them.

Missy jumped from the truck and ran into the trees to pick up a handful of leaves and toss them into the air. She laughed as they floated back down around her and Penny teared up at the sight. Her daughter rarely smiled and laughed these days, so it was good to see it now.

She glanced at Caleb who was also smiling at the scene. “Would it hurt anything to spend some time outside?” she asked.

He shook his head. “I think that’s a great idea. It’s a beautiful day and no one is going to come around out here.” He knelt beside Missy. “Would you like to see the creek?”

She nodded and took his hand. Caleb turned to Penny. “You want to join us?” He held out his other hand to her and Penny took it.

It felt nice walking beside him as the warm spring afternoon air rolled over them. She soon heard the current of water from the creek Caleb had mentioned. It wasn’t a small, shallow creek you could walk through, but a creek with what looked like a strong current. On the embankment was a canoe and a kayak, neither of which looked to have been used for a while. She figured if she tried to overturn either, something might scurry out from underneath, but she approached them anyway.

“Planning on taking a boat ride?” Caleb asked her.

“No, but it’s good to know they’re here in case we need to get away quickly. Without you, Missy and I are basically carless. These might come in handy if someone shows up.”

“No one is going to find you here.”

“It’s better to be prepared and not need it than need it and not be prepared.” She took a chance and overturned the canoe, surprised when nothing jumped—or slithered—out.

“Do you even know how to operate either of these?”

“Actually, I do. I spent summers as a teenager at my grandfather’s lake house.”

That seemed to be enough to convince Caleb that prepping these boats was a good idea. He pushed the kayak over, then helped her clean each of them up as best they could and made sure the paddles were close by as well.

Missy played and ran and jumped as they worked and Penny was glad for the time outside in the fresh air. They’d been holed up inside for too long but this isolated area provided the perfect excuse to allow her daughter some outside time. Caleb had made a good choice in bringing them here.

After clearing out the boats, she called for Missy to join them for another walk through the woods. Earlier, she had grimaced at each crunch of the leaves beneath their feet, but now she was relaxed enough to enjoy the walk and she didn’t see anyone or even another cabin.
