“My phone is ringing again.”

The police lieutenant, a portly man with a sunburned face and cynical gray eyes, ignored this comment. Beside him, another man, with short-cropped dark hair and a salt-and-pepper mustache, opened his mouth to say something, but closed it again. He had been silent through most of the interview. The phone stopped ringing.

He was stuck in a windowless room with no indication of whether it was day or night. All Michael had to go by was how he felt, which was as if he had been stuck in this pokey room for days.

“So you admit you were involved with that isolationist group?”

“I infiltrated the group to get close to a suspect. That was last year. I haven’t had any contact with anyone from the group since then. And no, I did not kidnap the woman. If you check with her, she will verify my story.”

The lieutenant tapped his pen against the police report. “A woman on medication for mental health issues and, according to you, with memory problems? Not very convincing. You have a permit for that gun of yours?”

“I showed you my identification. If you contact my boss, he can verify that I am a US marshal.”

“We’ve verified your prints match the ones on file,” the lieutenant said grudgingly. “But your boss is out of the office, and all anyone will tell us is that you’ve taken a leave of absence for personal reasons.”

The quiet man added, “And your behavior doesn’t fit with law enforcement guidelines. You found a woman in distress on the side of the road, and instead of taking her to a hospital, you isolated her with you in a remote cabin where she could not contact anyone if she needed help.”

The police lieutenant frowned at the interruption. “Let’s return to your activities. You shot the tires out of a van.”

“After they took a shot at me. Yes.”

The lieutenant leaned back in his chair, folding his arms and looking satisfied. Irritation raked down Michael’s nerves. “After they took a shot at me. Self-defense.” He stopped. Alienating this man further would only make his job harder. “The point is, there are a couple men out there who tried to kidnap the woman calling herself Rachel Garrett. We need to find them, see who’s behind all this.”

The lieutenant raised one eyebrow. “We?”

“Someone needs to find them.”

Michael’s phone, on the table between them, began to ring again. “Sure you don’t want me to answer that?”

The quiet man pressed the mute button on the phone. Blessed silence fell.

“Thank you,” Michael said. “Though I would rather have answered it. She might need my help. I know how crazy the story sounds. But it’s true. Rachel’s not safe in that town.”

The quiet man leaned forward, his dark eyes sharp. “Even you refer to her as Rachel Garrett instead of calling her by this doctor woman’s name.”

“I can’t force her to accept her real identity,” Michael snapped. “She needs a doctor’s help to get her to see the truth.
