On the drive to Maple Hill Farm (the Caldwells are the kind of family who have a name for their house), I went over what I knew about Fourey. He had been kind of a wild kid, and he’d never gotten along well with his father. As an adult, he’d done something so bad he got thrown out of the family. He’d moved to Florida and done well there on his own. Or at any rate, he claimed that he had. He had maintained a relationship with Miller and his family, but they weren’t close. Georgia seemed to like him, which in my book was not a point in his favor. He had some kind of friendship with Marilyn Karr, also not a point in his favor.

But did Fourey have a good motive to kill his brother? Well, unless he was operating on some Zen level of nonattachment, he had to be angry or at least resentful that Miller got everything, and he got nothing. But that had been the situation for a long time. Why would he suddenly decide it was time to kill Miller?

Money wasn’t a motive. Fourey didn’t get anything when Miller died.

But, maybe Fourey wasn’t as successful as he claimed. Sebastian said that he’d sold his boat. Maybe he needed money, asked Miller for it, and Miller had refused. That had infuriated Fourey, and he’d killed the brother who had everything but wouldn’t give him anything. That didn’t seem right either. Especially the part about Miller refusing to help his brother if he needed it.

By the time I reached that point in my speculating, I’d also reached the Caldwell home. Maple Hill Farm is about a mile outside of the city of Himmel. A long driveway leads to the main house on top of the hill. It also branches off in the direction of the guest cottage where Fourey had said that he was staying.

When I knocked on the door, he appeared almost instantly with a welcoming smile on his face. Although I hadn’t scheduled my visit, he didn’t seem surprised.

“Leah, hello. How nice to see you. Please, come in. I assume you’re here to talk about Miller.”

The guest cottage was small, but well furnished. The floor plan was open, the kitchen was well equipped, and the living room was cozy. A short hallway presumably led to a bedroom or two and a bathroom.

“Can I get you something to drink? Water? Coffee? Something stronger? It’s a holiday today, plus it’s five o’clock somewhere.”

“Water would be great, thanks.”

He handed me a bottle of water before pouring himself a glass of red wine and sitting down next to me on the couch. I scooched into the corner so I could turn to look at him while we talked.

“I want to say at the start if my questions offend you, I’m sorry. I’m just gathering information. I’m not accusing you of anything. But I like to get right to the point when possible.”

“Not very much offends me. Let’s get to it,” he said with a smile.
