Lucy stood in the shadows watching Wade. He’d come back, forgetting even his reason for riding out, just to make sure she was safe. To warn her to be watchful. The knowledge filled her with a sweet, fierce sensation. He was different than the other men she’d met and spent time with. But it didn’t change the fact she only mattered to Wade because she was Scout’s daughter.

She pushed aside regrets and longings. “Let’s go back to the house, Roy.” She waited for the boy to plow from the water and race toward her.

“This is sure a nice place. Guess we could do worse than stay here, don’t you think?”

Stay. Here. With Wade. With her father. “It’s not possible. Sooner or later we have to stop hiding and start living a real life.”

Roy bounced around until he faced her. “You just don’t want to stay because you’re mad at Scout. How come, Lucy?”

She looked past Roy. What did she say to a boy who longed for family? Who craved attention so badly he lapped up the slightest kindness? She remembered feeling much the same way. Only she had Mama. And her faith. “Roy, people are never what we wish they could be. Best not to expect they will change. Like I told you before, God loves us and that’s more than enough.”

“No, it’s not. I want someone I can hear and see. Someone with hands to touch me. Don’t see God doing that, now, do ya? I expect that’s why He made people. To do the stuff we can see and feel.” He glowered at her a moment then raced off toward the barn to wave goodbye to Wade.

She wanted to call him back, warn him to guard his heart against wanting people to fill that need.

But he yelled something at Wade and waved until Wade was far out on the prairie.

She could only pray Roy wouldn’t be hurt. And while she was at it, she prayed the same for herself. Her cheeks stung as she recalled how she’d let Wade hold her hand and promise to protect her. Her mouth twisted in disgust. As if she needed anyone to take care of her. Yet, she’d come perilously close to forgetting the fact.
