They were so close to crossing the pass, but that didn’t matter. When it came to life and death, close to safe didn’t count. David had been close to reaching Hakeem that day, close to the room where his best friend had been trapped, but in the end, the distance he’d gained didn’t matter. All that mattered to him and to Angela, all that mattered to their team, was that Hakeem hadn’t survived. David had hoped never to be in this situation again, and he had spent the last two years with this weight on his shoulders. But he was right back here again, the stakes unbearably high. This was Rain, and he couldn’t deny any longer that the feelings he’d had for her, the ones he had tried so hard not to think about, were still there, as strong as ever. Despite the fact that they’d been apart for five years, the thought of losing her was too much, no matter what happened between them. This day was a disaster in every way.

Rain was looking between him and the man, her eyes wide with fear. He had to get her away from that gun.

“I’m giving you one more chance,” the man called above the wind. “You have our property. All you need to do is lead me to it. Once we’ve made the exchange, we can go our separate ways.”

Anger coursed through his voice, as if he had lost patience with this long ago. But so had David. He knew better than to believe that this would be so simple, and he was sure Rain did, too. But a gun was moving back and forth between her and David. This wasn’t about trust or belief. This was about survival. Rain didn’t answer, and David could see the man was getting angrier. He was focusing all his words and attention on Rain, just glancing at David from time to time to make sure he wasn’t moving.

“You have what I need,” said the man, then gestured to David. “This guy has nothing I want.”

Rain had told him the same thing earlier, but her eyes widened at the guy’s words. They made the threat feel much more real.

“If you shoot him right now, there is no chance I will ever get you what you want.”

David had to admire how strong she sounded, in the face of all the danger.

But the man’s expression relaxed a little, like this was what he had been waiting to hear. Like she was confirming his suspicions.

“Now we’re understanding each other,” he said, and David could’ve sworn there was a hint of a smile on his lips.

The longer they stood here, the more uneasy David grew. He glanced at Rain. Her eyes were filled with fear, despite the firmness he’d heard in her voice.

“After you let him go safely, I’ll come with you,” she said.

The words jabbed in his gut.

“No, Rain,” he growled. “This isn’t going to go well for either of us.”

She had to know that the moment she showed him to the stash, he would need to get rid of her.
