Chapter 13

On Wednesday afternoon, Yvonne waited for Larry Boone to show up. Everything was ready for the book signing. She’d set up a table, covered it with a white tablecloth she’d found in the back, and set up chairs for the author and customers. She’d also lit two cinnamon-scented candles and placed them on the counter to add to the holiday ambience. It was festive at the bookstore, but Yvonne was having trouble staying in the Christmas spirit. She hadn’t heard from Abraham since he left her house Sunday evening, and it bothered her even though it shouldn’t.

She was percolating coffee in the back when the bell on the door jingled, so she rushed to the front of the store, rounding the corner just as Jake walked in.

“Wie bischt?”

Yvonne smiled. “Gut. I think we’re all ready.”

Jake grinned and pointed a finger at her. “Listen to you. Learning the Deitsch.”

“Well, not much, but it’s hard not to when I hear it spoken so much.” She knew “Wie bischt” was a general greeting that was sometimes a question meaning “How are you?” and sometimes just “Hello.”

She walked around the counter, popped open the cash-register drawer, and said, “Yesterday, I went to the bank and got some smaller bills. If we have much of a crowd at all, I think it will be Amish women, and they tend to pay with cash.”

“That’s why I pay you the big bucks. Always thinking ahead.” He tapped a finger to the side of his black felt hat. Most of the Amish had switched from straw hats to felt or sweater caps since the temperature had dropped.

She chuckled. “Um . . . Well, I don’t know about big bucks, but I like my job. How’s Eva?”

“The same. Bored and ready to have the boppli. I just stopped by to see if you needed help getting the fire going.” He nodded toward the wood-burning stove that sat off to the side. “But I see you’ve got it under control.” He rubbed his hands together, then moved closer to the warmth of the fire.

“Yeah, it’s fizzled out on me a few times lately, but today, I seemed to have done okay. Maybe it’s the practice I have at home, keeping the fire going in my fireplace.”

“I can’t stay. Lots to do. But Eva wanted me to let you know that she’s called everyone who has a cell phone and told them about the book signing. Hopefully, you’ll have a good crowd.”

“I hope so. I just made coffee, and I’ve got a plate of cookies I was getting ready to bring in.” Yvonne had confirmed with the author yesterday that he was in town. “Larry Boone is staying at the Peony Inn.”

Jake burst out laughing. “Well, I’m sure Lizzie and Esther are entertaining him.”

“Oh, I’m sure.” The widows were known and loved by everyone in town, even though Lizzie strayed from the Amish ways sometimes and marched to her own drumbeat.

“Best of luck.” Jake waved as he took large strides toward the exit.
