Jack helped his crew get the last piece of plywood up on the first story and then asked Mark and Lem to set up the lift he’d borrowed to start on the second story after lunch. While they took care of that, he checked on Felty, who was walking the house’s perimeter with a large magnet roller to pick up stray nails on a construction site.

Not yet sixty, the older man had good stamina. Since his arrival, he’d been working and only taking a water break when Jack insisted. After Beth had left, Felty had sorted all the lumber, stacking like boards together. He’d then helped Jack count the wood and discovered that they had, indeed, received the wrong order. Jack got the matter straightened out after twenty minutes on his cell phone, mostly on Hold. He was promised a new delivery in the morning and was told to use any lumber he needed from what was delivered and they’d figure out the cost later.

“You want to take a break?” Jack asked Felty.

“Don’t need a break.” Felty continued to roll the powerful magnet through the grass. “A lot of work to get done here.”

“But it’s almost lunch. Your daughter will be back for you soon. One of your daughters,” Jack corrected, hoping it would be Beth.

She sure had him confused. One minute she spoke to him sternly, the next she graced him with the most beautiful smile he’d ever seen. He thought she liked him, but he couldn’t be absolutely sure. Usually, he could tell—girls smiled a lot at him and giggled and hung on every word he spoke. But not Beth.

And maybe that was what intrigued him about her. She seemed different than the other girls he’d been taking home from singings or dating. Beth was more mature, but in a good way. She had a good head on her shoulders. She listened to him and was interested in what he had to say. Their conversations were never one-sided like they were with other women. Beth had questions and opinions, and she didn’t hesitate to share them with him.

The woman was trouble. Jack could see that. After the disaster with Willa, he knew the smart thing to do was to stay away from the Koffman girls. He needed to attend county events for single Amish men and women and meet a nice girl that way. The problem was that he couldn’t stop thinking about Beth. He didn’t want to meet anyone else. He wanted to get to know her better to a level he’d never reached with any other woman he’d known in his past.

Though Jack had always accepted he would marry someday, he hadn’t been in any hurry. He liked playing the field. He liked the flirting and the fun that came with being single. But these days, the idea of driving one more girl he didn’t know home from a frolic was almost more than he could stomach. Because he’d found himself daydreaming of marriage. He thought about building a little house that he could add to as his family grew.
