THEY ORDERED TWO HOT coffees from Beans and walked the entire length of Commercial Street while Liberty vented to Sawyer. He was the perfect listener, only interrupting to ask clarifying questions. She didn’t mention her quest to find the infamous secret Santa, keeping her frustration on the Todd issue.

“I can look into this with my HR department to see if the station is crossing any lines.”

“That’s sweet of you.” She placed her free hand on his arm. “But you don’t need to do that. Is it ironic that my job is to look into these kinds of situations, and here I am, the possible victim of one?”

“That’s why I offered. How would your boss feel about you going to HR?”

“Gary’s fine. He’s rough around the edges. I got the feeling he wasn’t too thrilled with Walter pushing Todd for the job. It’d be a total low blow to me, sure, but the station would eventually come under scrutiny. I can see them giving Todd a spotlight on the six o’clock news. Maybe something about fitness or wellness. In a month, everyone will be making their health a resolution. And come February, everyone will have forgotten about it.”

“That’s a great idea. Maybe pitching that angle will ensure you get the Liberty 4 You series. Not that you’d need to. You deserve it regardless.”

“You’re good for my ego.”

“I’ll be honest, I wasn’t much of a news watcher until lately. I’d scroll through the AP and world news, not taking much stock in the local buzz.”

“Ouch.” She moved her hand away, but he reached for it and tucked it under his arm.

“It’s never too late to be a convert. And on a side note, that Todd guy’s got nothing on you. Your smile, your honest eyes... you light up the screen, Liberty. You’re beautiful but you also do honest reporting. The way you interact with people shows how much you care.”

She didn’t know how to respond and nearly stumbled. “Thank you,” she said quietly. They walked another block and then reached the entrance to her building. “I should get back to work. Thank you for taking my mind off everything.”

“I didn’t exactly do that.” He tossed his empty cup in the nearby garbage can. “You needed to air your frustrations, and I’m glad to be a sounding board. But I think I got cheated out of the coffee date.”

“How do you figure?” She tossed her empty cup as well.

“With a real coffee date, we wouldn’t talk about work.”

“I didn’t realize there were rules to this.” She bit her bottom lip to squelch a smile.

“I’m not exactly up on the rules of... coffee dates, but in my mind, if you talk about work, they don’t count. We’re going to need to try this again. Maybe with a meal.”

“Hm.” Liberty tapped her chin. “You have an excellent point. This was absolutely not a coffee date. Some fresh air, a little exercise, and a venting session is all. A meal sounds like a great idea.”

“Tonight?” he asked, his stunning eyes hopeful.
