Lou

Things with Scott were… perfection.

I would never have used that word out loud to someone, but in the safety of my own mind I could admit to it. It had been two months since our first proper night together—I wasn’t counting that disastrous first attempt at a date—and I was floating on cloud nine.

Scott still treated me as romantically as he had that first proper date that we’d had, but sprinkled in between the romantic adult dates were the times I spent with him and with Pete. That kid was the sweetest, most adorable thing I’d ever met. I was just as enamored with the son as I was with the father. Pete loved animals and nature, loved telling me facts and even let me read to him a few times. I felt honored.

Despite our talk about keeping things slow, we were spending a lot of time together. I wanted to ask Scott if this meant he was serious about us, and if I could tell my parents about our relationship, but I didn’t want to push. He was the one with a son, after all. Scott hadn’t said anything on that front, but I was aware he hadn’t told Pete that we were dating, and I didn’t think he had ever introduced a girlfriend to Pete before. I didn’t want to push too far and ruin things when they were going so well.

Too well, in fact. I should’ve known that something would come along and throw a wrench into the works. The wrench being my observant mother.

I was having breakfast at home with her, enjoying my fried eggs on toast, when she sprung it on me.

“So,” Mom set her book down, “who are you seeing?”

I nearly choked on my eggs. “What?”

Mom fixed me with a knowing look. “Lou. You can’t think I’m that dumb. I know that you’re seeing someone. Is it…” She paused. “Dexter?”

“No!” I blurted out.

“Because if it is, I understand why you would be wary of letting us know, after you went back and forth so much…”

“I’m not seeing Dexter, trust me, Mom, we are done.” I kept my voice firm but gentle. I didn’t want her to think I was angry with her, but I wanted her to know that Dexter was firmly in the past.

Mom nodded and looked pleased. “I’m glad. I mean… if he had made you happy then of course that’s all I would have cared about. But if he didn’t… if you had doubts… then I’m glad you’re moving on.”

“Thanks, Mom.”

She smiled and then grew serious again. “But I’m serious, honey, I know you’re seeing someone. You’ve been going out all the time and I know it’s not just with your friends. You’ve been smiling all the time, daydreaming, constantly cheerful—I haven’t seen you like this since you were in high school and had crushes on boys. Dexter certainly never made you act like this. Probably a sign I should’ve realized he wasn’t good enough for you… but no matter! The point is, I know you, and I know you’ve got a man.
