CHAPTER 13

CATHERINE

“Did I ever tell you how I met Lisa?” Tony suddenly asks gulping down his glass of wine.

I wasn’t expecting him that question.

“No. My dad just informed me that you had met someone and next thing I know you were engaged after a year.”

I remember being so jealous that he had met someone but he seemed genuinely happy with Lisa. I didn’t know her well and I never really wanted to but I know she was a good person.

“She was working as a waitress in a restaurant in New York. I went there to have lunch on a business trip and the minute she spoke to me, I was entranced. I convinced her to come back to the hotel with me and the rest is history. It was a whirlwind romance. We rushed a lot of things. We thought we were in love but life doesn’t work that way.”

Did I hear that right?

“What do you mean by, you thought you were in love?” I question.

Tony sighs, his face exhibiting all the pain I know he keeps hidden inside of him. I drop my glass of wine of the table in front of me, before moving towards his end of the couch and placing a comforting hand on his shoulders.

“Don’t get me wrong, Cat. I loved Lisa. I always will but it took losing her to realize just how much. We were fighting a lot the week she died. I think after the engagement our buzz or whatever died down and we were starting to realize that maybe we had made a mistake. I had only known her for a year. We didn’t know each other perfectly well.”

Tony groans, covering his hands with his face. I can feel him ready to shut down. I’m positive this is the most he has ever told anyone about Lisa but I need him to open up fully.

“You can trust me,” I say rubbing his back and trying to ignore the tingles shooting up me from the close contact.

“I have the tendency to say really dumb, stupid things when I’m mad. We were fighting on the day of the accident. She asked me if I wanted to end it and I was shocked that she would take things so far. I thought that was her trying to break up with me and in my anger I lashed out. I told her to fuck off. I said I always knew she would leave me and so she should if she wanted to. I coldly told her I didn’t need her in my life and then I left her alone. She was crying, I heard her crying but I didn’t look back. A few minutes later, I heard her start her car and drive off. I got the call about her accident an hour later.”

Oh my God.

No wonder he has been so shaken and broken. He blames himself.

“It wasn’t your fault, Tony,” I say softly.

He gives me a bitter smile.

“That’s a joke, right? Anyone and everyone who hears that story would immediately know how much of a fucking douchebag I am.
