The yoga class was one of the ones that Lara held in the upper loft area. Her class filed in carrying yoga mats. As Lara had said, it was mostly older women, Gideon's age and up. One elderly woman with a halo of white hair walked with a cane. There were also a couple of younger women and a teenage boy who appeared to have been brought along by his mother or aunt.
It was much warmer than earlier, with a full day's sun having heated the loft until they didn't even need the space heater Lara kept unobtrusively tucked next to a pile of building supplies.
"Everyone, we have a new student joining us today," Lara said with a clap of her hands. "This is Gideon, and he's brought his daughter along."
Gideon immediately found himself the center of attention. Addy was an even bigger hit, and she was clearly glorying in the cooing and petting as she insisted on trying out yoga herself.
While Lara was handling it all with reasonable grace, Gideon noticed her giving the women a few grumpy looks as they clustered around Gideon like a flock of curious hens.
But there might as well have been no one else in the room but her. He only had eyes for Lara.
It was the first time he had really seen her in full-on teacher mode, and she was wonderful. She was energized and enthusiastic, patient with each student as she coaxed them through their poses.
Gideon had no trouble at all getting into the poses Lara showed him; in fact, they felt much too simple to really stretch out anything. But he was surprised how much he had started to feel it after he had held some of the poses for a while. He hadn't quite believed that this sort of exercise could do much for him, but he was starting to see that in fact it worked muscles deep in the core of him that hadn't been used much. By the end of the yoga session, he was pleasantly stretched and surprised how worked-out he felt. There was definitely something to this yoga after all.
The other students all said goodbye, and everyone had to pat Addy or solemnly shake her hand and tell her how well she'd doneâand then it was just him and Lara and Addy left behind. Gideon helped Lara stack the spare mats that were provided by the gym for those who hadn't brought their own.
"So what do you think of yoga?" she asked.
"I think I wouldn't mind learning a little more about it with some private lessons."
Lara grinned. "I think that could be arranged. I happen to have an 'in' with the instructorâbe careful, honey!" she interrupted herself to call to Addy, who was now running around the loft in great swooping arcs, holding her arms out to her sides and making Vroooom! noises.
"Daddy, Daddy, look! I'm a plane! I'm a dragon-plane!" she cried, and for some reason that completely baffled the adults, she found this the funniest thing she'd ever heard and collapsed in squeals of laughter, kicking her feet.
