âHey, Aethlem. Letâs take a rest. My back is killing me.â Ryoko Saito stretched, accompanied by a series of loud pops. âUgh, if anyone catches me doing this old-lady shtick, I can kiss my career goodbye!â
âRruff?â Aethlem tilted his head sideways.
âDo you get it, Aethlem? No, I suppose not.â Ryoko placed a hand on the hellhoundâs back, speaking to him as if he were a small child. âItâs probably different for youâwhatever you are...â
The other day when sheâd been introduced to Aethlem as her guide, she had admittedly been put off. âEh?! A dog?!â However, seeing how he seemed to understand all her commands, sheâd come to almost want a smart pupper of her own. After just one day together, Ryoko already thought of him as a friend.
For Aethlemâs part, he had been wary of the new companion heâd been entrusted toâhearing her go on and on about her pet theories and opinions, her speech like an unending stream of rain on his earsâbut it was a hellhoundâs duty to fulfill their assignments without running or shirking. He would defend his new partner to the end.
âOr...do you get it?â Ryoko asked.
âR-Ruff!â Aethlem bowed his head.
âMan, you guys are so smart! I guess I shouldnât be surprised by anything when dealing with dungeon monsters.â
Aethlem puffed out his chest, dog tag rattling from his collar, and let off a string of small barks.
âOh, right. âDogâ! Youâre a dog,â Ryoko corrected herself. âAnd such a good boy!â
Aethelem moved in toward Ryoko and nuzzled her cheek with his nose.
Weird. Ordinarily a wolf or some kind of big animal would be offended by being compared to a dog, right? But before Ryoko had time to reflect on Aethlemâs complexes further, he had pressed his nose hard into her side, nudging her to get up. Break time was over.
âHey! What the heckââ Ryoko looked in front of her, seeing a translucent blue slime wriggling just a little ways ahead.
âJeez, youâre worse than a drill instructor,â she mumbled. âCanât a girl ever get her beauty rest?!â
Crocodile tears in her eyes, Ryoko readed her bottle of benzethonium chloride and spritzed.
