Chapter 19: RAINBOW’S END

“WHERE AM I?” Paul roars, nearly tearing catheters out of his arms in the process. Bereft of a reply, he is forced to rely upon his hazy vision. Medical monitors. A cardiogram charting his unease. Unconscious on either side of him: skeletal patients siphoning oxygen from crinkly bags. It isn’t a state hospital, otherwise Paul would be handcuffed.

Frayed and weathered canvas walls the sickly space, but there is no roof to speak of. This absence permits Paul a look at a cognac-coloured skyline congested by CBLOCKs and unambitious skyscrapers. He’s made it to the RIM.

Paul’s loud quandary has elicited the attention of a raven-haired pixie. She leans over Paul. “Not much honey left in the hive, eh?”

Paul coughs a bloody retort, shaking free the rain pooling under his eyes.

“In any event, welcome to Camp MUD.”

“Oni...”
