Light years away from the felicities of romance is the so-called oldest profession. Prostitution, as in the selling and buying of sex on a one-to-one and consensual basis, is not illegal in the South. HIV testing is only voluntary, however, and the results are officially confidential; venereal clinics are readily available. Today, in the South, brothels and organized prostitution are not legal but there are still places where sex is bought indirectly through the purchase of a drink. In the North things are worse (see page 155).
