Chapter 17
Sound. Noise. Voices. Static. Camaraderie. Purpose. Existence. Stage 4. Pieces of the whole. I am. A name. I have a name.
Exhausted. Beyond belief. Leveling in SIGINT might be costing me dearly. Iâm right in the thick of it and I can barely move. Thereâs no way that I could run from the men who were sure to find me. Theyâd trace a literal crumb trail to the shanties Iâd used to climb up onto these roofs. Iâd had to do a big loop to end up back here, so hopefully they might not search this far. It would be my luck that they came upon me.
I couldnât risk lying here waiting for my stamina to replenish. This rooftop was like all the others. White, with peeling materials that would batter away in storm rain and tear away in strong winds. There were huge abandoned pots which once held magnificent plants. They were no longer maintained and cared for. The plants were long dried to spindly brown tendrils that lied on the roof. A hint of times past. Stains of dirt and water formed varying rings around the planters. They offered meager shade.
It was my only escape. A way to hide, and it wasnât much. I dragged myself to the planters and tucked myself in their shade, beneath overhanging crisps of plant matter. A viewer didnât have to be too careful to spot me, but it was better than being out in the open.
I waited forever. Iâd never been in a position where time stretched for so long. I was unable to move much for these eternal moments, until my stamina hit the 50s. Then I was able to sit up and breathe more deeply.
I once spotted a figure traversing a rooftop maybe 7 buildings away at some point. A Jaune. He stayed up there for a bit, pacing back and forth, maybe yelling down to his comradesâit was hard to tell.
It dawned on me that they werenât really putting in the effort to come hunt me down. Maybe it was my due diligence in creating a long path around, maybe they were afraid to confront me, maybe they didnât get paid enough. Any guess was good.
By the time my stamina was fully replenished, we were well into the afternoon. Evening was only a few hours away and I was ready for more action. While I rested, Iâm sure they were jumping to action.
All that time gave me the liberty to figure things out. I had a plan. This would be the most dangerous part of my mission so far and it was the only way forward I could think of. Eliminate them now.
I checked the foreign gun I had. Only 8 rounds, little more than half the magazine capacity. I left the gun and Orionâs gloves on one end of the roof. After assembling the sniper rifle and loading it, I donned Orionâs helmet.
That familiar and unfamiliar foreign consciousness pervaded my mind like a mental fog and I forced my mind to shove any thoughts of intelligence gathering to the wayside.
