The Methodist Episcopal Church services were originally held in a variety of places, including stores and warehouses in the Old Village. Construction on a new church, facing Portage Street, was begun in 1836 but was not completed until four years later due to a lack of funds. However, as soon as the basement was completed, meetings, Sunday school classes, and sermons were held there.
