Here it is, break time again. How about a little snack—maybe a piece of fruit or a handful of nuts? Be sure to get up and move around. Think about something pleasing—a place you’ve been that makes you happy or an event you’re looking forward to.
Whatever greatness goal you have chosen, you have to get to work and make it happen. Sometimes that’s joyful and fun, passionately pursuing an activity that really matters to you. Sometimes it’s brutally hard, because to get where you want to go you have to do things that are not intrinsically fun or satisfying.
David was a self-employed artist. He loved his work. He had all three of the requirements for greatness—talent, opportunity, and dedication. But he worked alone much of the time, with little feedback or encouragement from others. There were days when he had great difficulty focusing on his art. He read the paper, wandered into the kitchen to get a snack, looked at some stuff online, found a home improvement project that needed his attention, sent an email to an old friend, had another snack, ordered some supplies he needed, looked at some more stuff online—you get the picture. We were talking about curation and he asked me, “What do you do about procrastination? How do you make yourself work even when you don’t feel like it?” Or as one of my colleagues put it, how do you achieve “nocrastination?”
Fortunately, psychologists have done a lot of research on how to motivate people. Often the research focuses on how to motivate other people, but the same techniques can help to motivate yourself.
Here are a few of the techniques that have proven effective:
