Theo refused to tell us how he solved the puzzle.

The more we objected, the broader his grin got. Alaric was particularly annoyed by this refusal.

“It won’t make a difference now, damn it. Just tell us what the answer was.”

Mason interrupted. We were gathered around the flagpole in Theo and Euphoria’s space, and Mason held up the banner box. “I can see the answer right here. The code that unlocked the box was 3-1-1-2-1-3-1-4.”

He looked up, and we all looked back. O spoke for all of us. “Well, what the hell sense does that make?”

“Why?” Alaric attempted to use his height and size to intimidate Theo when he asked the question, but Theo was taller and broader. He just laughed.

I turned to Euphoria. “Do you know why that’s the code?”

She shook her head, her grin uncertain but clearly happy. “Not a clue. He stared at it for about five minutes. Then he walked to the box and keyed in the numbers, and boom. The box was open. I have no idea how he did it.”

A laugh bubbled up in me. I was left confused but also getting my mental hands around a growing sense of awe, and it tickled my sense of humor. It was like watching the work of a really good close-up magician.

Magician, I thought distantly, in the calm and rational part of my brain. Theo definitely fits that Jungian archetype.

We weren’t the only ones left wondering what we were supposed to do now. The Cupid’s Quest team had planned on the challenge taking us at least three days. Theo had slashed that schedule, and now we had time to spare.

After the cameras had their fill of Alaric and others attempting to browbeat, persuade, or bribe Theo into explaining his logic, we were summoned to an impromptu meeting on the terrace of the hotel.

The glory of the summer sunset had begun to paint the sky in ribbons of blush and apricot when Shout nudged Julie to stand. I was happy to settle in for a little of Julie’s stream-of-consciousness. I’d had a shower and was wearing my blue sundress (appropriate to the weather at last). Plus, my “partner” was still steaming with unfulfilled frustration, and that knowledge was a warm ember glowing in my chest, where the meanest part of me chortled over his discomfort.

“Okay,” Julie said, holding out her hands to hold back any conversation. (Unnecessary. We were poised to catch every word she said.) “So, that challenge went faster than anyone expected—so, like, applause to Theo and Euphoria, don’t you think so?”

She clapped her hands together, and I joined in with a glad heart. Foxed Alaric, didn’t you, Theo? Thank you for that.

Others joined in—with sincerity or with sarcasm, it didn’t matter. We applauded, and each camera caught its intended victim’s reactions.

I beamed in pleasure at the group. When I caught Theo’s eye, he tipped me a quiet wink. A quiet, unspoken, secret communication from inside a thick crowd of people.

Now, what was that about?

And that little
