Identifying Habits that Hold You Back

The soft issues you are attempting to identify as ideal for your new culture have nothing to do with a lack of skill or intelligence. The bad habits in your leadership team are also not due to personality flaws that require physiological evaluation. Instead, we are dealing with challenges in interpersonal traits and behaviors.

Marshall Goldsmith11 compiled a list of 20 bad habits, some of which are more obvious than others. The partial list of bad habits that follows was recognized by Goldsmith and can be used as basis for identifying the contrary behaviors desired in your new culture:

Winning too much. To win at all costs.

Adding too much value. The overwhelming desire to always add your two cents.

Passing judgment. The need to rate others and impose our standards on them.

Making destructive comments. Needless sarcasm that we feel makes us sound witty.

Telling the world how smart we are.

Speaking when angry. Using emotional volatility as a leadership tool.

Negativity. Sharing our negative thoughts even though we haven’t been asked.

Withholding information. Not sharing information so you can maintain an advantage over someone

Failing to give recognition.

Not listening.

Passing the buck. The need to blame everyone but ourselves.
