CHAPTER 14

"Yeah!” Brian cried, slamming his paddle on the table. “Ten to eight. Game point!”

“Bring it on, Glazier,” Mike Chapman said. A blue and yellow ping-pong table bridged the distance between the two men.

“Serving,” Brian called. And he whacked the little ping-pong ball over the net where it bounced off the corner of the table and into a nearby trashcan.

“Dammit!” Mike said. “You win again, Glazier. How much time do you spend up here? You’re a pro.”

“I like to put in a good two hours a day when I can,” Brian said proudly.

Mike went to retrieve the ball. As he crossed the hall, he nearly collided with a scruffy young guy in a puffer jacket riding by on a hoverboard.

“Whoa! Sorry, Miles!” Mike said as the hoverboard whizzed by.

The kid on the hoverboard called back as he glided down the hall, “Watch where you’re going, asshole!”

“Who the hell was that?” Brian asked.

“New intern,” said Mike. “I get a weird vibe from him.”

“He’s an entitled punk,” Brian concluded. “Kids are shits these days.”

The two men headed into a small kitchenette just off the rec room. Mike opened the fridge. Inside, there were rows and rows of bottled, canned, and boxed drinks.

“Can I get a coconut water?” Brian asked, wiping the sweat from his brow.

“Sure thing,” Mike said, grabbing two juice boxes.

“So is the sampler out yet?” Brian stabbed his straw into the top of the box.

“Not yet. We’re still trying to get Taylor Swift and Adele to sign on. We’re getting a lot of resistance from their people.”

“You’ll let me know when it’s out?” Brian asked.

“Don’t I always?” Mike sipped through his narrow straw.

“Did you hear they’re gonna have Trump’s campaign people here to speak on the twenty-fifth?” Brian asked.

“Are you into that guy?” Mike asked skeptically.

“Abso-fucking-lutely,” Brian said. “Who else is gonna look out for American jobs?”

“And build a wall along the southern border?”

“You want every rapist in Latin America pounding down our doors?”

“That’s fucked up,” Mike said.

“I call it like it is. You got a problem with that?”

Mike chuckled. “That’s why I love you, Brian.”

“I love you too, bro.”

“OK, I gotta get back to work. I have a meeting with Brenda downstairs at eleven.”

“OK,” Brian said. “Meet you at the air hockey table at two?”
