Chapter 12

Desi dreaded what she was about to do, but she had been up all night and hadn’t been able to come up with a better option, so she forced her mind into calmness and headed for the mess hall. It was nearly empty when she arrived. Almost immediately, she spotted Wolf sitting at one of the tables, absorbed in her computer.

Desi hesitated. It wasn’t too late to change her mind. Maybe if she just spent a little more time on the problem, she could work it out for herself. But no, she knew she had to do this. Embarrassed by her momentary lack of courage, she took a deep breath and walked over to Wolf’s table.

“How did you do it?” Desi said as a way of greeting the other woman. Her tone was harsher than she had intended.

Wolf was about to take another bite of her half-eaten toast, but she paused when Desi spoke. The dark blue jam threatened to drip onto her keyboard. “Come again?”

Desi let herself fall into the chair across from Wolf. “How did you do it?” She rested her head in her hands, exhausted.

“How did I do what?” Wolf asked.

“The competition yesterday. I’ve been over and over it, and I still can’t make sense of how you won.”

Wolf set down her toast. “Then let me enlighten you: my team outperformed yours, and you lost. Any other questions?”

“I knew this was a bad idea…. Just forget it.” Desi got back up. It had been a mistake to come to Wolf.

“Wait,” Wolf said with a sigh. She pushed her computer to the side. “I’m sorry. What do you want to know?”

Desi nodded slightly and sat back down. “First off, the flag. I had it in a highly defensible location with guards posted at the only entrance. They didn’t even realize the flag was gone until the game was over.”

Crystal smiled in an almost-friendly way. “That was Anderson’s idea—he developed our offensive strategy, which included using the air ducts to access the room undetected. He knew how you were likely to act, so we were able to counter everything you did.”

“That’s cheating,” Desi said, frowning. “You used him because you know we’re friends.”

Wolf folded her arms. “That’s not cheating,” she said calmly. “We used the best intelligence on hand to formulate our plan. It just so happened that Anderson was the one who had the information we needed.”

“That part makes sense, anyway,” Desi said grudgingly. Part of her was proud of Justin—as far as she knew, Justin had never led a team before. She didn’t give him enough credit, instead tending to think of him as the same scrawny kid he had been when they first met.

“What part doesn’t make sense?” Wolf asked.

“How you managed to capture half of my team without anyone noticing. Your people were invisible. That’s not something that happens every day.” How had Wolf made her team invisible? That part had really been bothering her.

“On Neophia, invisibility actually is an everyday occurrence,” said Wolf, her eyebrows arched.
