GRASSLAND

Abe knew he was wasting his time trying to talk her out of it. “I still don’t think it’s safe out there. Give it a few days until we catch these things.”

“Always the worrywart. I’ll be fine.” Clare opened the gun cabinet. She took out her Steyr SSG Marksman. She made sure the caps were covering the lens of the high-power scope. She slipped the competition rifle inside a soft case along with a box of .308 Winchester cartridges and two detachable 5-shot rotary magazines.

Clare’s father had been a state champion sharpshooter and taught her from an early age. Even though Clare never cared for hunting, it didn’t stop her from killing a predator threatening her animals. She was a phenomenal shot. Abe watched her behind the barn one day; plug a penny dead center from 100 yards.

“I’d feel better if you wore your dad’s Ruger.”

“If you insist.” She opened a drawer at the base of the gun cabinet. She took out a coiled belt with a holstered revolver and a box of .38 specials. She put the gun and the bullets inside a small travel bag.

“Sure you don’t want me to check on you?”

“Abe, you have a town to watch after. Stop your worrying.”

Rounder bounded into the room. He looked up at Clare pensively as if to ask what was keeping her so long. She got the message.

“All right. I’m coming.” Clare smiled at Abe.

“How long will you be gone?”

“Well, figuring eighty goats and they want me to clear off two acres of bramble, I’d say five days.”

“There’s no talking you out of going?”

“Abe, I have a business to run. The sooner I get these munchers on the job, the sooner I’ll be back cooking your supper. Until then, there’s some fried chicken and a couple of steaks in the fridge. I think you can manage.”

“Just be careful.” Abe put his hand up to Clare’s cheek and kissed her.

“Don’t miss me too much.”

Abe followed Clare out. He watched his wife open the door so Rounder could jump up in the camper truck’s cab. She started the engine and gave him a wave. He could hear the goats blatting inside the twenty-four-foot long livestock trailer as she drove away down the drive.

He hated to think of her out there alone.

Sure she had Rounder but he wouldn’t be a match against that pack of bear-dogs.

The last person to see the savage beasts in the woods had been Ronnie Blight and he swore he saw them hightailing it up the mountain. Abe hoped it was true because they would soon be out of the county and become some other sheriff’s problem, and he could stop fretting about Clare.

But then again Ronnie had claimed seeing UFOs landing on his cabin and little green men dancing on his roof.

Abe was feeling a little hungry having not eaten breakfast.

Clare’s cold fried chicken sounded pretty good right about now.

He headed back to the house.
