Sassy popped her head up off of her paws when Destiny stood but the terrier didnât budge from safe guarding the doll.
Destiny dashed across the hall to use the nearest phone. While it seemed as if it took the police an extraordinarily long time to come to the house, in reality it only took a few minutes. The house and yard soon filled with cars and officers. She tried to explain everything that had taken place the night before and that morning. She wasnât certain how any of it could be of any use to the police, since she had not heard anything else after she returning to bed. They wanted to know if she had relocked the door after letting the dog in, or if she thought Krissy might have gotten up searching for Sassy and might have gone outside.
Destiny was almost positive she had locked the door after letting Sassy in, and while she was fairly certain Krissy would never venture outside on her own, the truth was she was by now unsure about everything that had happened the night before. Destiny never would have thought that Krissy would have ever let Sassy out by herself in the first place, so how could she be certain whether or not her daughter would have been brave enough to venture out into the dark, backyard to go search for Sassy? None of it made any sense. What if she had left the door unlocked and someone came in and took Krissy? Wouldnât she have heard that? Wouldnât her daughter have cried out or called for her? There was no way a stranger would have been able to enter the house without Sassy barking like crazy and waking her up.
Destiny tried not to fall apart throughout all of the questioning. What she really wanted to do was to get up and out to begin looking for Krissy herself. What if the officers werenât taking it seriously enough and werenât going door to door to make certain one of the neighbors hadnât stolen her daughter? There were too many what ifs and no answers. Her head felt as if it was going to explode. Every time the door opened, she looked at it hoping someone was going to come in at any moment with Krissy in their arms saying they had found her sitting on the curb or something. Where was she at?
Just when Destiny didnât think it could get any worse Tony came bounding through the door shouting to anyone within listening distance he wanted to know what was going on and what had the bitch done with his daughter. Several officers ushered him to another room and while every now and then she could hear Tonyâs raised voice, she couldnât hear what they were saying. Someone finally bought her a hot cup of coffee and while the thought of drinking anything made her want to throw up it was good to hold onto something.
Somewhere around lunch time a neighbor came
