Chapter twelve

Eric

I'm hunched over my desk, the glow from the computer screen casting a sterile light across the scattered papers and coffee cups. It's been hours of the same routine until a ping from my phone breaks the monotony. A message from a buddy: "Have you seen this? Delilah's hilarious!"

Curiosity piqued, I click on the link he sent. There she is in all her wavy-haired, hazel-eyed glory, commanding my attention with her latest social media escapade. I lean back in my chair. Delilah Smith, what are you up to? A reluctant smile tugging at my lips as I hit play.

"Welcome to 'How NOT to Secure Your Home,' starring your truly inept burglar, Delilah!" Her voice rings out, chipper and infused with that sassy edge I remember so well.

The video cuts to Delilah, donned in a stereotypical black-and-white striped shirt, a mask perched comically atop her head. She's fumbling with a set of oversized, cartoonish lock picks at a door. "Now, folks," she quips, "if you want to keep intruders out, make sure your lock is more complicated than a child's diary."

I chuckle despite myself. She's got that timing down pat, and I can't help but admire how she turns even the mundane into something captivating.

"Exhibit A," she continues, gesturing to a potted plant beside the door. "Placing your spare key under the welcome mat is like sending a written invitation to burglars. But here—" Delilah lifts the pot, revealing a small keypad underneath, "—is Resilient Service's latest innovation. Even if I knew the code, this baby has a built-in alarm that would have the neighbors peeking through their curtains faster than you can say 'false alarm."

As the scene unfolds, Delilah trips over a strategically placed Roomba, flails for balance, and ends up sprawled face-first onto a couch. "Security tip number two," she says, her words muffled by a cushion, "Robots are your friends."

My laugh echoes in the empty office. It's impossible not to be drawn into her world—the effortless way she blends humor with genuine advice. And there it is, my company's name, Resilient Service.

"Who knew security could be this fun?" I muse aloud, shaking my head at the absurdity of it all. Delilah's charm is undeniable; she's breathing life into an industry often cloaked in shadows and fear. Her levity's a beacon, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't proud that it's my business riding those waves of laughter into viral stardom.

"Eric Cruise, you've got yourself one heck of a marketing genius," I whisper to myself, knowing full well that Delilah's creativity is something special. She's taken the rigid skeleton of security and fleshed it out with her vibrancy, her wit—a far cry from the gray, solemn world I've grown accustomed to within these four walls.

The video concludes with Delilah winking at the camera, the last frame freezing on her grinning face. My cell phone buzzes again, messages flooding in with praise and inquiries about our services. The excitement bubbles up, unbidden, a testament to Delilah's magnetic pull.
