Chapter 14

Millie stared at her husband in disbelief. “You’ve been stripped of your title as captain of the ship?”

“Not stripped of my title, but have been requested to step aside so that Captain Oberlin can complete the voyage.”

“I take it you haven’t seen the news?” Patterson asked. “Colt Kenworth’s death has made headlines. Siren of the Seas is sailing around with a big black eye and every single death and investigation within the last year is being brought up.”

“Surely, we don’t have more deaths or investigations than any other ship,” Millie argued.

Nic arched a brow. “A mafia boss is murdered and his body is found in the sauna. Reginald Hawkins, a well-known actor, is murdered and lowered onto the stage in front of thousands of passengers. The Southampton Strangler boards the ship after taking out another victim.”

Millie lifted a hand. “Okay, so we’ve had more than a few deaths, but all were solved and none of them directly involved the crew on board Siren of the Seas, at least not recently.”

“It doesn’t matter. Danvers is feeling the heat, and this one is personal. I’m officially no longer in charge of the ship until they figure out who or what killed Kenworth.”

Millie’s mind whirled. She had her own list of suspects and needed to start digging around. She also needed to determine the current level of interest in Kenworth’s death.

“I can see the look in your eyes, Millie.” Patterson pinned her with a stare. “I think you should know I am no longer in charge of the investigation.”

“That’s why Stanley Zelchon is here. He’s handling the investigation while Oberlin takes command of the ship.” Millie began feeling lightheaded at the implication of the men’s arrival. Siren of the Seas was home. It was filled with the people she loved. What would happen if Majestic Cruise Lines fired Nic?

Where would they go? Would they move to Italy or to Michigan? Would Nic be able to find a position with another cruise line? She sank down in the nearest chair. Sure, she’d been in trouble plenty of times, but hardly ever involving Nic or Dave Patterson and never at the same time. “This is awful.”

“It’s potentially catastrophic,” Nic said. “The worst possible outcome is the death goes unsolved or, if Kenworth was murdered, the killer walks off this ship.”

“What can you do?” Millie asked Patterson.

“Nic and I are in the same boat.” Patterson laughed at the irony of his words. “We’re officially on the sidelines.”

Millie slowly stood. “Just you two. Your security staff and everyone else on board are status quo?”

“Yes. They’ll be working under the direction of Oberlin as captain and Zelchon as head of security,” Patterson confirmed.

“I’m free to move about the ship in my regular assignment of duties,” Millie said.

Patterson used his best “I’m the boss” voice. “I forbid you from sticking your nose in this.”

“You just admitted you’re no longer in charge, and I highly doubt you’ll report me to Stanley Zelchon.”

“You could lose your job if you get caught,” Nic said.
