Now way, way back when the country was still figuring itself out, there lived a man named John Henry. He wasnât a regular man, he was a steel-drivinâ man. But weâll get to that a little later.
His story starts when he was just a wee baby boy who came into the world to Mama and Papa Henry, sharecroppers in Virginia in the mid-1800s. They sure did love their baby boy and they showed him off to any and everyone. And a good-looking lad he was, big for his age and strong too. Within the first few months he could walk and talk. Mama and Papa Henry knew he wasnât a regular boy, they knew he was something special.
John Henryâs family had to work hard to make ends meet. They toiled in the tobacco fields from sunup to sundown. And sometimes Papa Henry worked on the railroad. Heâd hammer steel drills into mountains to make holes for explosives to blast openings in the rock for train tunnels.
One evening, after a long dayâs work, Papa Henry sat his son on his lap. John Henry looked down and saw his fatherâs ten-pound hammer. A curious boy, he picked it up. Now this was no simple feat for a child, but John Henry was no regular child. He lifted it up as easy as could be. The long wooden handle with the large piece of steel at the end looked oddly fitting in his small hands. At that moment, Papa Henry knew it was his sonâs destiny to work on the railroad. âA steel-driving man you will be,â he proclaimed. Then he looked down at the boy and thought, I hope it wonât be the death of you or me.
As the years went by the demand for steel drivers grew. Now, barely in his twenties, John Henry was six feet tall, well over two hundred pounds, and stronger than any man around. Fulfilling his fatherâs prophecy, he became a steel driver, working on the rails from sunup to sundown.
