Elizabeth did not think that Rosings Park was a pleasant place to be at all. The house was very dark with shutters being kept closed most of the time. No one seemed to talk a great deal and Lady Catherine did nothing but criticise her. She wasn’t going to tell Mary that she was lonely. The house at Longbourn had often been very noisy and the atmosphere had often gotten on her nerves, but she missed it now. She had even tried to become friendly with Anne de Bourgh, but Anne was rarely seen and spent most of her time in her room.

She put her letter away to reply to later. Lady Catherine had informed her at breakfast that they had been invited to visit Belton Manor, an estate belonging to Lady Catherine’s friend, Augustus Baldwin, to have tea with his sister, Mrs. Fiennes.

Elizabeth was reluctant to go, but she knew that she had no choice in the matter. She didn’t like Augustus Baldwin. She had noticed how his eyes rested on her chest when he spoke to her. Lady Catherine had introduced him as an old friend, but she found it very strange. He did not seem the sort of man her ladyship would want to consort with at all.

“It will be just a small tea,” explained her ladyship. “It will be a chance for you to practice your manners among other women.”

Elizabeth swallowed down her feelings of resentment. Lady Catherine seemed to believe that she had no experience of moving among good society. That belief was entirely wrong. Her ladyship could only have gotten that impression from Mr. Collins. What a nasty man he was. Since her arrival at Rosings Park, she had seen him every day. It was sickening to witness how he fawned over Lady Catherine. Elizabeth was surprised that he had insisted on making her mother and sisters leave Longbourn. She could not imagine there would ever be a time when he would tear himself away from her ladyship to live at Longbourn.

Elizabeth slipped out to the stables to see Monarch before they left. She was glad that Mr. Darcy had kept to his promise and not told her ladyship about her visits to the horses. What Mr. Darcy did not know is that she had talked to the groom, who she found out was called Jim, and she had persuaded him to put a saddle on Monarch. “You will not be able to control him as you are not astride the horse,” Jim had told her, but he had still done as she had asked.

Monarch hadn’t liked the saddle, but she had persevered and at first she had only walked him around the field with the saddle in place. It was only one morning that she had decided to ride him. The horse had not been happy as she had climbed on his back, but she had been ready for him and able to hold the reins tightly enough to make sure he did not rear up.
