Sleeping

Guesthouses and sobe (rooms) are dotted along all access roads to the national park.

Most midrange hotels are clustered in Velika Poljana, close to Entrance 2, overlooking Kozjak Lake. All of these are Yugo-style (lots of browns and beiges and smoked glass), though a couple have been renovated. Book rooms at www.np-plitvicka-jezera.hr.

Pansion Etno House GUESTHOUSE €€

( 774 760; www.plitviceetnohouse.com; d 450KN; ) A genuine mountain lodge, this lovely place has eight pine-trimmed rooms of real character and comfort: all have TV, desk, stripped floorboards, en-suite shower and bright bedspreads. There’s also a pool outside, with a little paddling area for children. A little dining room downstairs hosts breakfast and evening meals. The owner’s father is building a very similar place next door with eight more rooms. It’s 1.5km south of Entrance 2.

Hotel Plitvice HOTEL €€

( 751 100; s/d 533/710KN; ) Enjoys a quiet forest location and has three classes of rooms; the smarter ones are quite modern, spacious and attractive.

Hotel Jezero HOTEL €€€

( 751 400; s/d 614/873KN; ) A dated (or retro?) Yugo hotel, Jezero has plenty of facilities (sauna, pool, bowling alley, gym and tennis courts). With 229 rooms, it gets all the tour groups.

Korana Camping Ground CAMPGROUND €

( 751 015; per person/tent 51/65KN; Apr-Oct) An autocamp with a restaurant, cafe-bar and 40 bungalows for rent, it’s about 6km north of Entrance 1, on the road to Zagreb.
