In a novel dealing with the 1919–21 conflict it was stated that in a small southern town ‘even those who approved of Volunteer activities had wanted them to happen elsewhere, fearing the vengeance of the Black and Tans’ (F. Carty, The Irish Volunteer [1932], p. 275).

54 These figures are based on newspaper reports and the reports of military courts held in lieu of inquests in WO35. C. Townshend in The British Military Campaign in Ireland (1975) provides a valuable critique on the latter sources. The government stated that between 1 Jan. 1919 and 31 March 1921 92 civilians were murdered in the twenty-six counties and that between 1 Jan and 31 Apr. 1921 73 civilians had been deliberately murdered by Sinn Féin assassins, (Parl. Debates, 5 series, cxl, 463, 2086). Of course it is sometimes difficult to be sure why an individual was shot, widespread disorder offering opportunities for ordinary crime and personal malignancy.
