ELEVEN
Before Arielle even made it partway down the hall, she knew she had overexerted herself. All that had happened was taking its toll on her mind and body. Another medical person exited Neilâs room.
She wanted to know what had happened and if he was okay.
The nurse whom she had tried to convince earlier stood beside her. âDo you need some help getting back to your room?â
âYes.â
The nurse supported her by bracing her under her forearm.
âHave you heard what happened to Sheriff Cobain? Is he going to be okay?â
âIf I did know, I couldnât disclose that without his permission.â
They entered the room. The nurse guided her over to the bed. She sat down, and the nurse helped her lift her legs.
Arielle gripped the nurseâs arm. âPlease leave the door open. If you see anyone enter this room, come right away.â
The nurse, who had a kind face, pulled the covers up to Arielleâs chin. âThe best thing for you is to get some rest.â
âPromise me. Youâll watch the room.â Her voice held an intensity driven by fear.
âIâll do my best.â
She handed the nurse the phone. âCan you set that close by so I can grab it if I need to?â
The nurse put the phone on the rolling tray and scooted the tray within armâs reach. She lifted the call button, wrapped the cord around the railing and set it beside Arielleâs hand.
âIâm close. All you have to do is push that button.â
âThank you.â Arielleâs body was tired, but her mind was still racing. Her hand rested on top of the call button.
âI can bring you something to help you sleep.â
âNo, thank you.â The last thing she needed was to be so out of it that she couldnât respond if the killer did come back.
The nurse picked up the flowers and set them on the windowsill, tossing the greenery that had fallen from the bouquet.
Arielle listened to the nurseâs soft footfall as she retreated. The door was left open, and light from the hallway spilled in. She fought the exhaustion for as long as she could. This had all been too much.
She fell asleep hoping, praying that Neil was okay and that it wasnât sabotage that had caused the medical emergency.
She awoke hours later, still groggy. The room was dark and the hallway silent. She pulled herself into a sitting position and reached to check her phone. Agent Ferris had not texted or called. Of course not. Everyone was asleep. Her phone said it was three in the morning.
Arielle thought about seeing if the nurse could tell her if Neil was okay, but she found herself fading even as she gripped the call button. She fell back asleep.
Hours later, she awoke with a start. Someone was in her room. She jerked when a hand wrapped around her upper arm.
âItâs all right. I just need to take your vitals.â The gentle voice of the nurse seemed to be floating in the room. Arielle never fully woke up while the nurse checked on her.
When she did open her eyes for good, daylight streamed through the blinds on the window.
