Chapter 19
“Just ask Devon to help us,” Razielle said.
We were stationed by one of the benches off a main sidewalk on the Academy grounds after getting out of Combative Casting. Nym palmed some snow off the bench to sit down. I preferred to stand.
Another week had passed, and we were no closer to getting the dagger because I had no plausible plan. I didn’t want to just break into Professor Voltaire’s office, smash the glass case, and make a run for it like a common criminal. There had to be a better way to retrieve the dagger. However, a part of me wondered if it really mattered, since the dagger was on full display in the office. It going missing from the case wouldn’t pass unnoticed for long.
But I wasn’t willing to give up yet.
“No,” I said. “I’m not willing to chance that yet.”
“I’d think your brother’s going crazy by this point,” Razielle said.
“He’s made his bed, so he’ll have to lie in it for as long as it takes.” I crossed my arms, not as an act of defiance, but just trying to stay warm. The sun was out and there wasn’t much wind this afternoon, but the calm air was still icy cold.
“Do you have any ideas?” Nym asked.
“Besides what we’ve already talked about? No; I’ve got nothing. But that doesn’t mean it’s time to quit, but to think harder.” I missed my crystal—the small comfort and warmth Eleanor had brought. I was suffering more in Combative Casting despite my extra practicing. The crystal did provide a noticeable difference. And unless I was willing to get my ass kicked in my underwear in sub-zero temperatures on a regular basis—to harness enough rage to accomplish menial magical feats—then I needed another one.
“What are you guys talking about?” Ivanic asked, crunching toward us through the snow. Bree was at his side, a purple scarf pulled tight around her neck.
“Maeve had a rough casting class, that’s all,” Razielle said.
“Maeve’s had a rough few months—what else is new?” Ivanic retorted, placing a hand on my shoulder.
“I’m not complaining about it, but just trying to move forward,” I said. They didn’t know about my brother being back, and I still didn’t want to share that monumental bit of information. Luckily, Ivanic hadn’t randomly shown up at my room. With Devon back in the picture, he was keeping a bit more of a distance, though his verbal advances never ceased.
“She needs her crystal back,” Nym said.
“It seems so unlike you to lose things—especially something so important,” Bree said.
“Not to mention her phone,” Razielle said.
“Haven’t you lost or broken three phones so far this year?” Nym asked.
“We’re not talking about me,” Razielle snapped back. “And that third time was not my fault at all. You try not to drop your phone while a bird divebombs at you in mid-flight.”
“Why did you even have your phone out while you were flying?” Ivanic asked.
“I got a text,” Razielle said, hands on her hips. “I had to know what it said.
