Light-Balancing Gels. Although gels are available in all the same types as filters, the numbering system is a little different. The conversion and light-balancing filters in the bluish range, for converting tungsten to daylight, are the 80 and 82 series. In gels, these are called CTB (for "Color Temperature Blue"). Gels are also available in Full Blue, 3/4 Blue, 1/2 Blue, 1/4 Blue, and 1/8 Blue. A Full Blue gel placed over a tungsten light converts the color temperature to 5500K, balanced to daylight. However, if the desired effect is to keep the light slightly warm, then a l/2 Blue can be used to bring the color temperature to 4300K, more like mid- to late-afternoon sunlight.

The light-balancing filters in the amber range are the 81 and 85 series. In gels, these are called CTO (for "Color Temperature Orange") and are used to correct daylight to tungsten. A CTO placed over a strobe light converts the color to 3200K. These gels can be used to warm the light for effect. For example, in a multiple light strobe portrait setup using a main light, hair light, and background light, the photographer could choose to use a 1/2 or 1/4 CTO on the main light to add pleasing warmth to the skin tones without affecting the color of the other lights.
