The assistant ship commander was waiting for Myka when his lander docked with the light cruiser and he boarded the ship. Myka didn't notice his first officer's facial expression right away. “I greet you, Voldana.”

“Greetings Ship Commander. Preparations are almost complete for departure.” They started walking towards Myka's on-board office.

Myka shot several glances at the sub-commander's way as they walked. “What is troubling you, Voldana? There cannot be problems already; the mission hasn't even begun yet.”

“Complications come in many forms, Commander,” Voldana said, choosing to answer obliquely. “Why this mission should have more than its share of bother, I cannot comment on.” He said “bother” in the dominant voice. His intent was that it not be misconstrued as annoyances, but as their form of an expletive.

Myka gently grasped his shoulder and forced him to stop. “What is it, Voldana? You weren't nearly so troubled when we spoke yesterday.”

Voldana looked his superior in the eyes. “Yesterday is gone, Commander. What we have today – may or may not be bother. What we have today may end up turning into bother (again in the dominant voice) in the days to come.” He started walking again.

Myka trotted to catch up. “And where might I discover what this bother is, since you seem unwilling to tell me?”

“You will discover it in your office, Commander. Perhaps I am mistaken. Perhaps this is a situation that will help us complete this idiotic, Provider forgive me, mission that our Father has sent us on. But eighteen years of experience tells me I am not mistaken. Unless you arranged for the passenger to travel with us.”

“Passenger? What person can attach themselves to a secret mission of their own accord?” Myka paused. “Voldana, please tell me that the Emperor himself didn't decide to complicate my life and this mission by joining us.”

This time, Voldana grabbed his commander and forced him to stop. “It is not our Father. Having him join us on a mission such as this would only happen as punishment for transgressions caused by our families back at least fifteen generations.” They both laughed nervously at the remark. “No. This would only involve transgressions to ten generations.”

“It cannot be our Mother. I left my mate at the landing pad at the palace.” They continued on their way. “You refuse to tell me what this problem is?”

They turned a corner and arrived at the office. “I would prefer to not influence your reaction to the presence of our guest.” Voldana tried hard not to smile. “I must take leave to finish preparations for departure.”

Myka said one word in the seditious voice. “Coward.”

“I would prefer to consider it a judicious and efficient use of time.”

Myka repeated his one-word accusation, then followed with “Go. The sooner we leave, the sooner we can return. And I promised my mate that I would return as soon as possible. Go.”

Voldana hurried away, and Myka girded himself for what he would discover. After a moment, he opened the door and stepped in. “Oh Provider, no!” he exclaimed once he saw who was waiting there.
