Gaining Acceptance of New Techniques

Each of the tools we’ve just discussed works well and is widely used in modern organizations. Still, it sometimes seems difficult to try something different; people know what to expect in committees, and they’re comfortable with them even as they lament the time they’re wasting in one meeting after another. Here are some tips for gaining acceptance of new team processes.

• Just do it. Take charge and announce that you’re going to handle the meeting differently today. Your assurance in presenting and using these tools will go a long way toward ensuring their acceptance and enthusiastic use. A leader who is forceful and assured is seen as charismatic and is likely to have enthusiastic followers.

• Explain why you’ re doing something different. Point out that the tool you’re going to use is the best available for the task you’re about to undertake—coming up with good ideas, making sure concerns are aired, or coming up with a creative solution.

• Point out that these are widely used, effective techniques. Give specific examples of how they’re used in companies such as IBM, American Express, Xerox, and Adaptec.

• Treat this as a skill-building experience both for yourself and for your colleagues. Point out to team members that they will all be team leaders, formal or informal, and that learning these techniques may be of great value to them.

• Point out that mastering more group tools adds to the team’s resources. The tools don’t have to be used all the time, but they’re available when needed.
