Chapter Five

What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger

(Living the Entrepreneurial Life!)

I woke up and knew immediately that what I had just dreamed about was an apt analogy of my life as the wife of an entrepreneur. Because I had been thinking about this topic so much, and writing about it, I had to believe God was humorously handing me a visualization of what my life felt like for so many years. Perhaps, if you are the spouse of an entrepreneur, you can totally relate to this crazy dream:

We had just purchased a new car and were taking it for a spin. The car was shaped like a bulky bullet, wide and sleek. Dan drove it up a small hill, parked in a grassy area, and got out to gain a good perusal of his new purchase. I remained in the car and, for some odd reason, was sitting in the very back of this bullet-shaped monstrosity. While Dan gazed at the car, it began to inch forward a bit and I knew that sometimes that had happened with his tractor, so I wasn’t alarmed nor was he. We just figured the brake was slipping a bit and no harm done.

The vehicle inched forward enough that it began to slowly roll down the hill. Dan just stood there like he was fascinated, watching it … and me … taking off. I began to get quite anxious. As the car picked up momentum, I began to climb from the rear across two sets of seats that had a very narrow clearing from the top of the headrests to the roof. It was arduous to push and pull myself across these seats to get to the controls. I was sweating and using contortions to accomplish the task while the car careened out of control down a busy city street. No one was in the driver’s seat, so the car just plowed ahead of its own accord, gaining speed rapidly.

I wondered why the vehicle hadn’t hit something yet. It seemed to follow the street and have a mind of its own. I have no idea what Dan was doing as I was in this predicament. I just knew I had to gain some control and stop that car before it ran over someone or smashed into a building. A big bus and a bridge abutment with lots of cars and people were right where I was headed. I dove to the floorboard head first and pressed my hands on the brake as hard as I could. The car came to an abrupt and screeching halt only inches from the potential collision immediately in front of me. I was in awe of how the car missed anything in its path and stopped just at the moment before total catastrophe.

And, that, my friends, is a great visualization of how I often felt living the entrepreneurial life! Scary, exhilarating, often waiting for the other shoe to drop, and yet, usually avoiding total disaster. (Note: I didn’t say
