The echo of the girls' screams ran through Chris' head long after John had fallen. Everywhere else was silent.

Exhaling, Chris watched his breath in the cold and now-smoke-filled air. The reek of burning plastic spread through his house. Frank and Marie's home produced more of the noxious emissions with every passing second. How long would it be before they smoked everyone else in the cul-de-sac out of their homes? With an aftertaste on his tongue like he'd drunk diesel, the beginnings of a headache stretched through his sinuses.

At the bottom of the stairs, Michael stood frozen. Not that he ever wanted to see him in that state, but it was a good fucking job. The boy would give them away if he didn't get a hold of himself fast, and fear-induced paralysis was better than the stupid behavior of only a few minutes previously.

Pushing his foot against John's face for leverage, Dean wrenched his weapon free. The crack was like a branch being ripped from a tree, and it ran straight to Chris' gut. Glancing at his boy again, Chris saw there was no reaction on his blank face. What would be left of his mind once this was all said and done?

While wiping the blood from the head of his hammer onto his suit, which looked more like a butcher's apron than a three-piece, Dean stared at the wide and shocked eyes of the corpse on the drive. Before long, the hole in his head pushed undulating waves of blood out that pooled on the floor.

"You fucking arsehole!"

Chris looked at the cage. It was Mel. What was she doing? Goading these lunatics wasn't going to help anyone. What was wrong with her?

"You fucking pikey waste of space! Where do you get off hurting innocent people?"

Flinching at her words, Chris quickly checked Michael was still staying put before he looked back at the woman.

"Innocent?" Dean said. Looking at a couple of his men, he sneered. "Bring her over here."

At first, Mel refused to get out of the cage. Then a huge man with the dark-skinned complexion of an Egyptian grabbed Daisy by the throat.

From the gargling sounds, her face quickly turning red, and the way she grabbed his wrist, Chris could only assume he was squeezing hard.

When Daisy's eyes started to bulge and her red skin turned purple, Mel raised her hands and stepped forwards. "Fine. Just let her go."

Jumping out of the back of the truck, Mel stormed toward Dean. "I mean it, y. You're a fucking scumbag!"

If anything, Mel sped up as she got closer to Dean.

When she was close enough, Dean dropped his hammer. As it chinked against the floor, he caught her on the chin with an uppercut.

Flinching but keeping his eye on what was happening, Chris watched Mel's feet fully leave the ground. When she crashed down, her head connected with the asphalt with a crack, and her eyes rolled back.

Standing over her with gritted teeth, spittle sprayed from Dean's mouth. "Innocent? You call yourself
