Baggage
âPerfect timing,â Chief Chet said when the trio of investigators came over to meet him. âChip, Kelly and I just finished the bag search.â
âAnd?â asked Heather.
âAnd nothing,â said the chief. âWe didnât find the gun.â
âBecause the killer must have chucked it over the side,â said Amy.
âI guess itâs good that we donât have to worry about the killer still having the weapon,â said Heather.
âWe checked everyoneâs bags, purses, and pockets,â said Chief Chet. âAnd thereâs no sign of the gun.â
âDo you think the killer could have hidden it somewhere on board?â asked Ryan.
âWe sent the bartender to go check the ship in any places that someone could have hidden it,â said Chief Chet. âSeveral of the people we checked vouched that the bartender was behind the bar during the entire incident. And because he works on the ship, he might know some likely places where it could have been stored. I was going to have Chip assist him once we were finished, and we just finished.â
âWeâd like to talk to Chip first,â said Heather. âIf you donât mind.â
âNot at all. Heâs been very helpful so far,â said the chief with a nod. âHeâs a good kid.â
Ryan gestured that they should move away from the stragglers who remained from the baggage search. He headed toward the railing and Heather, Amy, Chief Chet, and Chip followed him. Kelly also joined after a moment.
âSo, the baggage search didnât reveal anything?â asked Amy.
âWe didnât find the gun,â said Chip. âBut no one refused to have their bag checked. Thatâs a good sign, isnât it?â
âI hope so,â said Heather.
âI did have one woman who acted a little strangely,â said Kelly.
âHow so?â asked Heather.
âShe seemed very nervous. And she kept clutching her bag. She was the one who was rather insistent on our offer that a woman search her purse,â Kelly explained. âBut once I looked inside, I didnât see anything unusual. There was no weapon. And there werenât any feminine items that I thought could have been her reason for embarrassment. I donât understand her reaction. Thatâs why I thought it was worth mentioning.â
âThank you,â said Heather. âWe probably will want to talk to her. Maybe there was something in her bag that canât be seen by the naked eye that made her nervous.â
A smile formed on Kellyâs lips. âI actually did sniff the bag when I checked it to see if it smelled of gunpowder residue. I guess Iâve been married to a police chief for long enough that I thought to check, but I didnât notice any trace of the scent.â
âSmart thinking,â said Heather. âAnd did anyone else act strangely?â
âA red-headed lady was really upset,â said Chip. âThere was a handsome guy trying to comfort her.â
âYes. Another woman seemed upset too,â said Chief Chet. âI could point her out to you all. She went through the metal detector when we were helping Chip. She was with the fellow with the belt.â
âWe spoke with Lorraine and First Mate Simmons,â said Heather. âThey donât know
