Grouping Symbols

The most common grouping symbols you’ll see in a mathematical expression will be parentheses. But there are others you should know about.

Brackets—they look like this: [ ]—are grouping symbols that work the same way as parentheses. They are usually used if multiple sets are parentheses will look too confusing. So, for example, you might see an expression like 200 ÷ [(2 × 52) ÷ 2]. In that case, work the grouping symbols from innermost to outermost: find the value of (2 × 52) and substitute: 200 ÷ [(2 × 25) ÷ 2] = 200 ÷ [50 ÷ 2]; then simplify inside the brackets and substitute: 200 ÷ 25; then solve the rest: 200 ÷ 25 = 8.

Another important grouping symbol is the fraction bar! It works by implying a set of parentheses surrounding the numerator and one surrounding the denominator: = = = 7. Make sure to keep this one in mind because it’s less obvious than the other two.
