Inside the station I stared up at the departures board. Names of faraway places flashed at me in yellow pixels. Berlin, Frankfurt, Milan, Rome, Munich. I wondered how far my money would take me.

I went to sit down on a bench outside. In a way, I wished I’d stayed with Christoph. I could have helped him with the calves for a month and been fed for free. I’d have been comfortable. I could have even done a few baptisms. I could have been ordained.

But I couldn’t stay knowing what Diana had told me. I couldn’t bear having to look at her and know what happened – knowing what Christoph didn’t. I played with the cross on the necklace he had given to me. I wondered how he would react if he knew the truth.

Eva would have been in her first hour or two of work, picking trash off the conveyor belt, watching the endless stream of junk flow past her. Maybe she was thinking of me. She had to be.

I got up and admitted what I’d known all morning: I was going to visit Eva at her place of work.
