Chapter 13: “D”-Construction

The explosion that rocked the world wasn’t from the gun in my eye, but another RPG going off. It slammed into the twenty-foot dogpile of constructs doing their best to murder me.

The constructs were strong enough that the RPG didn’t even scratch me. But the concussion wave from the impact and detonation blew the dog pile off of me, leaving me to deal with three suddenly disoriented constructs.

The construct on top of me fired.

Now that the armor was no longer fending off a ton of murder machines, it had already reinforced the armor in the helmet. The golem armor caught the bullet and pushed it back up.

Now that I only had to deal with three of them, I swept both arms up like a bear hug, only with power armor. They crunched and cracked like I had turned brick into powder. I rolled away from the main force and came to a knee. I drew my gun and had the Soul Ring ready to fire.

Automatic fire came from behind me, up the driveway of both entrances to the parking lot. For a moment, I thought that Fort Totten personnel had seen my plight and declared “Screw Posse comitatas.”

I looked over my shoulder and blinked.

It was D and a few dozen of his businesses’ “private security force.”

They were all wielding guns that I could only say were of questionable legality. Ask me if I cared.

The constructs had been scattered by the RPG like ants with the hill knocked over. They all tried to regroup, but wherever two or three were clustered, there was a hand grenade thrown into their midst.

D and two of his men ran over to me. Their guns were up, but they held them in one hand, just in case. I slid my armor away so they could identify it was me. The armor slid back into place, then slid out again. The armor pieces that slid out this time were my chest piece, and a sheath that covered my wounded arm and my wounded thigh, but they stayed under my clothing.

Now that it was no longer concerned with trying to keep me alive, the armor was focused on covering up my wounds.

The pain from both my arm and my leg suddenly stopped. D’s people got me to my feet, but I could stand without support.

I raised by gun arm again and opened fire. The four of us retreated away from the constructs.

More of the gang swept in from behind the constructs, pouring in from the parking lot in SUV’s, spraying more bullets into the constructs. The constructs shattered like they were the ones made of clay.

I smiled at what the SUV shooters were wielding.

I looked to D. I called out over the gunfire. “Tommy guns?”

D spared me a glance and smile. He nodded as he kept firing his Spectre M4. “Forty-five caliber, fully auto. Because I’ve met some of your bad guys.”

I spared a glance to the other gang members as I reloaded. Some of his men were using Uzis.
