William sat on the floor with his knees drawn to his chest. He took up a small part of the hallway near the medical bay, waiting for one of the physicians to let him know Lott’s condition. All the EDF security forces remained out of the area, staying in the central area near the forest and docking ramps.

Most of them couldn’t wait to get out of there.

A shadow fell over him. He didn’t look up. “Hey,” Margaret said. She nudged him with her foot. “What’re you doing down there?”

“Waiting for the administrator,” William replied. “See if she’s okay.”

“And they let you?”

William huffed. “They didn’t have a lot of choice. No one’s around to stop me yet.”

“Zitha forces are arriving to take the station from us. Captain Rowell talked them out of fighting over what happened to Lott. Considering what that idiot Aevers pulled, I’m shocked we’re not in the middle of a battle right now. Or waiting for the Zitha to come in here to kill everyone.”

“I’m glad,” William said. “After I went through to save this station. I’m glad they’re reasonable. Wait.” He frowned. “Are they going to make me go before—”

“Relax,” Margaret interrupted. “Their leader wants to talk to you so you should run back to the quarters they gave us, get cleaned up so you’re presentable. I don’t know what this Zitha will be like… hell, this is the first time I’ve met any of them honestly. But I’m certain they’d be happy to give you a minute.”

“Will you wait here?” William asked. “In case she wakes up? I… I really want to know if she’s okay.”

“They said she’ll be fine,” Margaret said, “but if it makes you feel better, yes. I’ll wait. But you’ll be meeting the Zitha commander, Ghrenda, in the conference room across from where we were going to stay.” She leaned against the wall. “I guess we won’t be hanging around here after all.”

“No, I imagine not. Though we’ll likely work with the administrator from one of the EDF ships.” William stood. “I’d like to check in with Marsha too.”

“Who’s that?”

“Lieutenant Commander Marsha Silva. She was on the bridge of the ship that brought us here. And she’s the one that took down Aevers. That piece of shit.” William wanted to spit, but he refrained. “She got pretty hurt from what I understand. Dunno if she’s been moved or what. I guess I’ll find out after I talk to this Zitha guy.”

“Send me a message if I can help. Otherwise, I’ll be here. Coordinating with the other ships the best I can. I don’t know if they need anything, but I guess one of us should be available. Oh! How long do you think it’ll be before the station is ready to move again? Is that even a possibility?”

“Takes a while to wind up,” William said, “but I heard someone say they had an idea of how to make things happen faster. Involved attaching some of the Zitha ships to the thing. I dunno.
