CHAPTER 7

Her life had been one big lie. The fabrication she’d invented not only protected herself, but also the ones she’d come to love once she boarded The Zephyr. There had been unconditional love from the start, something she hadn’t been exposed to until after the abduction. Those three days before Captain Stuart rescued her still fueled her nightmares on occasion.

It felt odd being across from someone who knew her before Luna Stuart came into creation. She preferred being Luna to Cassie. Her former self had been weak and easily manipulated by those in power, particularly her father. Not surprising, since she’d been a child at the time. Those who should’ve protected her were the ones who victimized her.

She decided against referring to herself in the third person again. Her mother wasn’t an idiot. Denying who she was would be a waste of time. The scar on her arm had confirmed her mother’s assumption.

“Dr. Patrone was the only one I saw who I knew after I was taken,” she shared. Luna bit into the sandwich she’d made for herself as if her stomach wasn’t doing somersaults. “My kidnapping had to have been executed because of my special blood. The people who took me didn’t try to hide their faces. Although I was only eight, I knew that not bothering to hide their identities wasn’t a good sign where I was concerned.”

Her mother paled when she mentioned Dr. Patrone. Luna didn’t remember much about her early years but she’d always sensed her mother’s discomfort whenever the doctor was present. He was always the one who drew her blood with no staff around.

“I always suspected Patrone had something to do with your abduction,” Gayle admitted. “He had been aboard a regal ship bound for Epsilon Prime when you were taken.”

Luna dropped her sandwich. “The ship I was on belonged to my father?” she asked in disbelief.

Her mother’s eyes darted back and forth as she absorbed what she’d been told.

“It doesn’t make sense,” Gayle said. “You were aboard a ship that left hours before I last saw you.”

The events of that day came back to her in a greater detail than it had in years. “When you last saw me or talked to me? Did they have some imposter posing as me while the ship I was one left the planet?”

It had always puzzled her how her the royal soldiers and spies hadn’t found her. She’d always considered herself a rare gem considering how much security seemed to hover around her. Yet someone had managed to get her off the planet with little fanfare.

“You always loved to swim,” her mother said. “It was impossible to get you out of the water until you were ready. You were swimming the last time I saw you. I didn’t see your face, but I just assumed it was you. There was a new security detail watching you and they had explicit orders to let you play in the water until you needed to prepare for dinner. When security came to get you for our evening meal, it was then that we discovered you were missing.
