A winter livestock market in Roman times, Ajaccio became a major settlement only after the Genoese erected a Citadelle here in the late 15th century. It expanded rapidly from 1580, and by the mid-17th century had become Corsica’s foremost port. Today, it serves as Corsica’s main tourist gateway. Above all else, it is famous as being the birthplace of Napoleon, a connection underlined by statues of the “Little Corporal” dominating the town’s squares.
