SOON AFTER Mrs Blunt acquired the idea of refurnishing and transforming the recreation room at Corrigan’s old hospital, Nadine received a postcard from her which she read with bemusement and a certain dismay. Her mother told her that she was taking up driving lessons, that at the beginning her instructor had seemed to be deeply alarmed when he had to be in a car with her, but she thought that he was now pleased with her progress.

Nadine could well understand why her mother’s driving instructor had felt such trepidation when he had to entrust his life to Mrs Blunt’s shaky skills on the road. She found it difficult to visualise an experience more hazardous and frightening than being taken out on a main road in any vehicle driven by her mother.

Nadine felt that Mrs Blunt’s general vagueness and hesitancy would constitute a serious threat to herself and others. She couldn’t believe that she would ever master the road signs.

“I have so much more confidence since I’ve met Corrigan,” her mother wrote. “Cross your fingers and think of me in two weeks’ time. That’s when I’ll be taking my test.”

“Who is this crippled person, Corrigan, and why does he have such an influence over her?” Nadine thought. “I can’t understand why he is making her drive. Some people are constitutionally unfit to be in charge of a car. My mother is obviously one of these characters. So why is this Corrigan persuading her to get behind the wheel? Does he want her to have a fatal accident? The whole thing seems most irresponsible.”
