15. Like George III, Cornwallis held regular receptions for local dignitaries. By now his large paunch had become a regular feature of cartoons about him. Here he is seen receiving a succession of sycophantic guests, pointing out his Garter star to one attendee. In the foreground Colonel Alexander Ross and another senior military officer hold an animated conversation. No Bengalis appear to be present.

16. The forbidding walls of Fort William and the severe architecture of Government House inside provided the first glimpse of Calcutta for new arrivals. Even for Cornwallis, the fort and its associated buildings were a stark testimony to the East India Company’s power and dominance in the region.
