-Numb-

“You can’t feel that?” Garrett poked my legs with his pocketknife, while I sat on the bed. “Seriously. That can’t be good.”

“I used some of my specialness on the grim today. I guess it was just too much too fast. I don’t think it’s permanent.”

“Yeah, but…” Garrett poked my leg again, this time with his finger. “Tell me when the feeling starts.” He traced his finger up my leg, but I couldn’t feel anything. He started back on the side of my knee and slowly traced his finger up my inner thigh.

“How’s your wife?” I asked before his finger found the area of my lower body that still had feeling.

Garrett drew back his finger and smiled. “She’s seeing someone else.”

“Oh, I’m sorry.” I shook my head. “You must hate me for sending you back to her.”

“No, I don’t. Funny thing was, she was seeing him, while I was seeing you. When I came back to work on things, she thought it was only temporary. When she realized I intended to stay, she told me about him.”

“Shit.” I chuckled, mostly out of discomfort.

“It’s better this way.” I frowned at his silver-lining interpretation. “No, really it is. We love each other so much, but trying to stay together through this. It would destroy us. Someday we’ll die, be reunited with our children, and then we’ll be together. But not here, not now.”

He touched my hand, caressing his thumb over the soft ticklish skin. “What about you? Is Ian your new man?”

I chuckled thinking about my almost murderer. “No, Ian and I are buddies. He’s loyal, but I’m pretty sure he only likes blondes.”

“And Matthew? Has he finally figured out what to do when a beautiful woman is madly in love with him?”

I opened my mouth to answer, but I wasn’t sure how to respond since Garrett seemed to have figured out my feelings long ago. I nodded and Garrett retracted his hand. I shrugged apologetically.

“I shouldn’t have left.” He shook his head somberly.

“I made you leave Garrett.”

“No, I mean the first time.” He whispered. “I should have tied you to the bed with that damn night gown and made love to you until the others came back.”

I gulped. It sounded appealing, but in a, those were the days, kind of way.

I glanced at the door, but Priest was not standing outside monitoring our conversation. I was in my bedroom with my former lover and he was content with catching up on his reading downstairs.

“I would have liked that very much…at the time, but even if it changed who would lie in my bed, it still wouldn’t change my heart. As much as I love you, I’m drawn to Priest—Matthew. I…I don’t know…insert any lame gushy love song here.”

Garrett smiled warmly, and tucked my hair behind my ear. “So you’re a romantic after all. Well, thanks for letting me down easy.” He leaned in slowly tipping my chin up for a kiss.

Again, I wasn’t sure what the protocol was on this. Garrett was
