Chapter Fifty-one
Enoch pulled away.
Corinne sucked in a breath.
âJust a secondâ¦â he said, letting go of her. He stood up straight and pulled his arms up, arching his back. It made a painful crunching noise.
âYou should try to fall in love with someone taller,â Corinne said.
Enoch smiled. âIâll add that to the list.â He rolled his shoulders. He took off his glasses and looked down at his shirtâthen reached for the end of Corinneâs soft cotton top to clean them. âYou should try to find someone with more years left in him,â he said. âYou missed my young and limber days.â
âYou were never limber.â
He laughed a breath through his nose.
Corinne brushed his hair out of his face. He looked tired. He put his glasses back on.
âCould I have a glass of water?â
âYeah,â she said. âI never gave you your tea. Do you want me to make you a new cup?â
âIâd like that.â
He leaned against the counter while Corinne got him water and put the kettle back on.
âI donât want to fight in your kitchen anymore,â Enoch said.
âYou want to fight in my living room instead?â
âI donât want to fight at allâ¦â
âI thought you said you wanted to be with me.â She dumped out the cold mug of tea.
Enoch rested a hand on the small of her back. âDoes that mean fighting?â
Corinne tipped her head up at him. âEverybody fights. Even people who have it easy. And we ⦠Well, weâre never going to have it easy.â
âBut we can work some things out, right?â
âAgree on house rules, you mean?â
He smiled and rubbed her back. âYeahâ¦â
âWe did agree on house rules, Enoch, and you immediately broke them.â
He winced. Too bad.
âWhat kind of tea do you want?â Corinne asked.
âSomething with caffeine. I need to get it together before I drive home.â
Corinne opened up her cabinet. A box of tea fell out.
Enoch looked up. The whole cabinet was crammed with tea boxes. âDo you go to the grocery store and only buy tea?â
âSometimes.â Corinne made him another mug of tea. Earl Grey. And one for herself. âDo you want milk and sugar?â
âYeah.â
She added milk and sugar to both cups and walked into the living room. Enoch followed her and sat on the couch. He drank some tea. He picked up the bowl of chicken, cold now, and started to eat what was left.
Corinne watched him. âI missed you,â she said, so soft she could barely hear herself.
He smiled at her. âI missed you, too.â
âDonât do that again.â
He stopped chewing. âI wonât.â
âI mean, if you need space, I guess you should take it. But it was so painful, not knowing whether you were going to call meâor whether you were going to come to your senses.â
âI thought I made it pretty clear that I wasnât coming to my senses anytime soon.â
âI donât even know what Iâm asking,â Corinne babbled. âI know I canât ask you to stay no matter what.â
Enoch set down the bowl. It was basically empty. He took Corinneâs hand. âYou could ask me thatâ¦â
âWellâ¦â Her chin was twitching.
