Preheat the main oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 13x9” baking dish.
Stir the sugar into the mashed sweet potatoes then stir in the beaten egg.
All at once, pour in the vanilla essence, milk, and ½ cup melted butter. Stir to combine then stir in the rum. Spoon into the baking dish.
Combine the pecans, brown sugar, ⅓ cup melted butter, and flour in a bowl. Sprinkle over the casserole.
Place in the oven and bake for half an hour. Set aside for 10 minutes before serving.
