CHAPTER FORTY

A small group of us went over to the screens together to view our assignments. Me, Miles, Lapira, Pawelski and Chavez.

I thought at first that I was getting it wrong. I couldn’t work out why my name had appeared where it had. It all seemed wrong and I just stood there in shock. And I wasn't the only one. There were a number of people standing there with their mouths open.

There were five possible career paths open to you upon graduation. There are spots for engineers, pilots, officer training, the Infantry or the Armored Division.

And that was where Miles was going. Armored. As soon as I heard it, it seemed to make perfect sense. I could see him as a tank commander. It seemed like the perfect fit. Only, when I looked closer, I saw that there was a gold skull next to his name.

I whispered to Lapira, “What’s with the skull?”

“Haven’t you heard?” she said. “That’s the new Mechanized division.”

“Mechanized?” I said. “As in…”

“Mechs. Yes, that’s correct.”

Pawelski had been put down to be an engineer. Clearly, the nanites had turned up something interesting about him, too.

Chavez had been given officer training but, given her new high status as top female recruit that should have come as no surprise.

No, the big surprise was that both me and Chavez had been put down for Spaceborne Infantry.

We were going to be joining the ranks of the fabled Shock Troopers.

The best of the best.

I went and looked at the other screens to see if anyone else would be joining us but I couldn’t find anyone.

Miles came over and lowered his voice.

“Spaceborne? Really? Are you kidding me? Those guys are maniacs. You’ve heard about the mortality rates, right?”

I held up my hand to quieten him. “Yeah, I know all about it.”

“And you still want to do this? It’s not too late to back out.”

I took a moment to consider this. It was one thing to aspire to something, quite another to actually go ahead and do it.

“I’ve thought about it. It’s what I want, so, yes, that’s what I’m going to do.”

“Oh, okay,” he looked over at Chavez. “That should be interesting then, for the both of you.”

He gasped when I punched him on the shoulder. I was going to miss Miles but we’d meet up again, I was certain of it.

It was just that things seemed to be moving far too quickly.

And there was still one other person I needed to thank.

There were long queues of people waiting to get to access the screens and I had to push past them in order to get out the door.

Outside, a fine rain had begun to fall, only it felt warm against my face. It sure was a crazy planet and I found myself wondering if, at some point in the future, I might look back at my time here with genuine fondness.

I looked around hoping that I might see Dr Barnier. As a captain she would have been up on the stage with
