Chapter Sixteen, Resolving The Trials.

I turn the doorknob, creaking the door open slowly. Soft white light pours through the crack of the door welcoming me to open the door further. The light is warm and inviting. It feels like Heaven calling me home so I step into the light with my mother letting it take us away from this Hell.

The light’s warm embrace fades and I open my eyes. I find myself in the most otherworldly, luxurious lobby I have ever seen. The lobby is dimly lit by decorative fire pits that have lava flowing in them. The wood that forms the couches and chairs in the lobby have grown out of the ground and are adorned with feathery throw pillows. The floor and walls are made of a dark polished black marble. In the center of the lobby is a large slab of glass inset into the floor revealing an aquatic display. Jellyfish, coral reefs, and many other forms of sea life roam past the viewing portal peacefully. Agro runs up to the glass and starts knocking on it frantically trying to get the attention of the sea creatures below. I don't see any fans or ducts for air conditioning, but a gentle breeze wanders through the empty space carrying the smell of sweet grass.

“You sure took your time David,” says a familiar voice from behind me.

I turn around to see the half smiling bony face of Death. What he’s smiling about I’m sure, but he owes me some answers.

“Where is my mother?!”

“She is here David, don’t be alarmed.”

“Don’t be alarmed? You tossed her into hell!”

“Well... this may come as a shock to you, but she was never in hell. I just led you to believe she was. It was your mother you met in that old house but that house was within a pocket dimension I created within the Hellscape to make it seem like she was in Hell.”

“What are you talking about? If she was in some hiding spot hidden within Hell, why did we have to run from the agents of sin I had already faced?”

“Very peculiar David, and yet so very interesting.”

“What? Why would you ever consider doing something so cruel? Making us think that we had made it out just to have us chased.”

“The living can only enter the Hellscape willingly and can’t be forced unless they are dead. You are not dead David, and I needed to give you a reason to enter Hell by your own will.”

“This makes no sense. So I’m not dead, my mother was never in Hell, and you needed me to do this because?”

“I will go into this with you in greater detail, but let's not keep your mother waiting.”

As Death says those words, my mother steps out from behind him. She has a big smile on her face and tears rolling down her cheeks. She holds her arms out reaching for me and I run right into them, holding her tight. Sobbing, I can't believe it’s her. That I get to see her one more time.
